The Lowryder Situation

Since I went to a Lowryder convention in the Staates I am somewhat fascinated by the whole Lowryder thing. The Lowryder is part of Latino-American culture and by far not as big in Europe. Inspired by the proud Mexicans and their crazy cars I felt the need to artisticly reflect on that.
In addition to that shows like "Pimp my Ride" started on MTV and over night it became quite fashionable to be entertained by hilarious overdone cars. I felt that this was exactely what my audience needed ! And I was right ! The founder of the "San Francisco Survival Laboratories" who builds robots that destroy each other said: "No matter how hard I tried to design something classy and conservative, at the end of the day people come to my show for burning cars, explosions and total mayhem."
Now having played a couple shows I can almost draw the same conclusion. My audience loves that thing and the car is still talked about long after the show is over.
In my show I perform with the fully interactive Chevvvvy Lowryder. The Lowryder mimics my moves in realtime. When I lift my leg so does the car, when I jump the Lowryder jumps...and so on...

Technical facts about the Lowryder:

I pimped the Chevvvvy in Cinema4d and imported the mesh into VVVV where I programmed all the interaction. I control the car with a wireless gamepad almost invisible for the audience. After the show I was asked whether the whole thing was prerendered.
The Lowryder was my VVVV kickoff. The first real project I did in this amazing software and also the beginning of my work on my diploma.
Conceptional thoughts on the "Bitches" visuals:
The Lyrics of this song can be seen as a critical reflection on pretenders and wannabes who front with their women, cars and money that they don't even have. So it is quite ironic that I perform with the virtual car before the song...
Since the lyrics of this song have strong keyphrases that directly evoke certain images I wanted to design a graphic set instead of an abstract one. For this track I felt that it was a good time to serve the cliché a little so I came up with the simple but effective concept to turn the thing around and to put Mo' into the position where he has the ladies, the car and the cash so he appears in a superior position when he brings forward his arguments.
We shot one day in the blue screen box. I later imported the footage of the ladies into vvvv and used it together with my `65 custom car. A different conceptual approach in this set is that the audience is responsible for the Lowryder movement. I get a nice chance to interact with the crowd. I animate the spectators to put their arms up and to wave them from letft to right as well as to bounce them up and down. The movement of the crowd is directly translated into the movement of the virtual car. The lyrics of "Bitches" have an agrressive tone. When thinking about visualizing the track I thought about blood that squirts on the screen. I therefore programmed an algorithm for computational blood.
